Maiden flight of West Wings Orion
From : Mike Broad
The West Wings Orion is a 60" light-wind rudder & elevator slope soarer of
traditional construction (i.e. ply and balsa). The basic kit cost me £25.50 +
£5 p&p from the Sussex Model Centre, to which must be added a Rx, a battery, 2
servos, and covering (I used Solarfilm and Solartrim). I did look at the
purpose-built covering irons, but they were £30+, so I used a standard travel
iron instead (I must remember to remove a few bits of melted Solarfilm from the
plate before our next holiday ....).
I actually finished the model before Christmas, but have been waiting for the
"right" flying conditions for the first flight. The forecast for Sunday
afternoon of the 22nd sounded right - a gentle easterly breeze. Best not to
think too much about throwing the delicate (compared to my EPP models) results
of many hours labour from the top of a hill, so arrive at Rodborough ... fix
the wing bands .... switch on ... check the movement of the control surfaces
... range check with the Tx aerial down ... extend the Tx aerial & check the
wind direction ... throw it ... it flies no problem at all ... and lands
safely.
Needless to say I did manage to stall it while close to the slope on a
subsequent flight, and came down nose first (photo withheld). Fortunately I got
away with it - just a few minutes re-gluing when I got home.
