Model Engineering Show at Thornbury

From : Mike Brinkworth

I thought I’d write a report on the model engineering show at Thornbury that I went to last week. Here goes…

I decided to go on Friday as I thought it would be quieter. WRONG! There were a lot of people there. As I wandered around the halls it struck me that there must be some sort of entry requirement, as nearly everyone was bald, or grey haired or a bit of both! …no personal comments please.

There was a wide variety of models on display, including railway engines, steam engines, Meccano models, yachts, jet turbines, models of steam engines made out of wood (?) that turned. You name it, it was there. There were also a number of trade stands selling tools, kits, engineering supplies etc.

My main impression was the sheer quality of the models on display. The dedication, skill and craftsmanship displayed in the models was quite something. One guy had build a 3ft long 20’s style roadster car from scratch and he said he had made everything apart from the spark plugs and tyres. He’d even made a set of axle stands! (photo below)

The Bristol model engine builders club (or something like that) caught my attention. They had on display model engines (surprisingly!) but they were V12’s, 16 cylinder radial engines (photo below) etc, all scratch built. Amazing workmanship.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, see the photo’s below to get an idea of what was there.

And finally ....

Mrs. Hunter was called to serve for jury duty, but asked to be excused because she didn't believe in capital punishment and didn't want her personal thoughts to prevent the trial from running its proper course. But the public defender liked her thoughtfulness and quiet calm, and tried to convince her that she was appropriate to serve on the jury.

"Madam," he explained, "this is not a murder trial! It's a simple civil lawsuit. A wife is bringing this case against her husband because he bought the latest hi-tech model gliding equipment with the the £12,000 he had promised to use to remodel the kitchen for her birthday."

"Well, okay," agreed Mrs. Hunter, "I'll serve. I guess I could be wrong about capital punishment after all."
